Coppins races to an impressive podium finish in Zolder.

Josh Coppins from Montueka, New Zealand has raced to an impressive podium finish in front of 15.700 spectators in Zolder. Treacherous weather conditions helped to make the sandy Belgian circuit very unpredictable and would certainly sort out the men from the boys.

“Lizzard” would be one of those men as the first heat saw him work his CAS Honda 450cc machine through the pack from an average start. Coppins rode a steady pace and picking off rider after rider he managed to move himself into seventh position as he crossed the finish line to gain valuable championship points.

Coppins’ notorious hole-shot reputation was just topped by Belgian youngster Kevin Strijbos as the Belgian and Kiwi lead the pack through the first turn of race two. Coppins lost no time in passing Strijbos and focussed his sights on the open track ahead of him. He lost the lead to yet another Belgian, this time being Cedric Melotte.
The duo matched each other lap for lap and at some stages the CAS Honda seemed to be closing the gap. By the time the last lap board had been shown Coppins was not taking any risks and was content to hold onto a well deserved second position.

“I’m really pleased with my riding today” explained the Kiwi. “I felt fast enough to win the second heat but then I made a few mistakes and Cedric got past. With the conditions as they were it seemed a wise idea to settle for second and take an overall podium. It is still a long season and getting through today and starting the season without any injuries was top priority.
