NZ Supercross Championship round 3. Freestyle Motocross Jumping. Arena Trials. 21 February 2004, Hataitai Velodrome, Mt Victoria, Wellington.

Supercross competition tightens at Tokoroa… next stop Wellington.

With 2 rounds of the 4 round NZ SX Champs complete, the circus heads to Wellington 21 February for the continuation of the battle. First a recap of the series so far -

Round one in Nelson 4 January saw former World #2 Josh Coppins assert himself narrowly over Yamaha rider Darryll King. Coppins has now gone to Europe to contest the premier MX1 World championship class.

At Tokoroa 17 January, the action heated up with heaps of different winners and three races decided by blocks on the finish line. Mason Phillips, with a second and two firsts took out the senior 250cc class with Darryll King second and Damien King third. The racing in the Senior 125cc class was just as close; Jonathan Burkhart winning with two firsts.

Spectacular freestyle performances at Tokoroa by Nick Franklin and Jarin Henriksen had the crowd cheering in awe as they saw them defy gravity with incredible moves at heights of more than 20 metres.”

At the halfway point in the National Supercross 250cc, Subway Yamaha team boss Darryll King holds a one point lead over his younger team mate Mason Phillips.

Darryll is also in a one point cliff-hanger in the 125’s, although in this class he is in the slipstream of Masterton’s Jonathan Burkhart who holds the lead.

The third round of the NZ SX Champs takes place 21 February 2004 as part of the MX3 event featuring Supercross, Freestyle Motocross and Moto Trials. MX3 brings the best of 3 off road motorcycle codes into one place at one time and is sure to be a winner with the Wellington crowds

The course will be built 2 weeks prior and involves around 2000 cubic metres of earth being trucked into the Hataitai cycle velodrome infield. Measuring in at 75 x 125 metres the field has plenty of room to create a spectacular Supercross track, big air Freestyle Motocross course and 3 tricky trials sections.

The trials sections will be made from old car bodies, upturned rubbish skips, wire rope containers, concrete pipes and logs which, believe it or not, the trials riders can ride over without putting their feet down.
