Castrol Honda Red Riders Rule At New Zealand Motocross Championships

The final round of the New Zealand Motocross Championships was held in perfect conditions on the immaculately prepared Harrisville track in Pukekohe over the weekend.

The huge crowd were treated to a history making event when for the first time in Australasian Motocross history a distributor backed race team won the number one plate in all three classes.
Despite the final outcome the days racing in the 125cc class was down to a last round, winner takes all race between Cody Cooper debuting the long awaited CRF250R and legendary campaigner Darryll King aboard his YZF250F. Castrol Honda Red Rider Cody Cooper passed Darryll King three minutes into the final moto and lead for the remaining seventeen minutes crossing the finish line to take the chequered flag 2 seconds in front of Darryll King.

Castrol Honda Red Rider Shayne King secured the 250cc title with somewhat less tension than Coopers 125cc crown. Shayne went into the day having only lost one race in the 250cc class over the whole series allowing him to secure the title with one moto still to be run.

The 500cc class was not so cut and dry with Darryll King shadowing Shayne throughout the later part of the series and with only 6 points separating the two brothers going into the final round. However on the day Shayne’s focus and superb fitness saw him take his 25th National title and for the second time since joining the Castrol Honda Red Riders Race Team, secure both 250cc and 500cc class trophies. Third and fourth place in the championship 500cc class once again went to Peter Glidden Honda supported rider Damien King and Castrol Honda Red Rider Corrie Sargent.

Castrol Honda Red Rider Race Team Manager Dave Borlase said: “We started the year with a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve and that was to win the Number 1 plate in each of the 3 classes. Thanks to the incredible effort of the Castrol Honda Red Riders Race Team and those who worked behind the scenes, we have been able to achieve our objective.”

Clive Cooper-Smith, General Manager of Blue Wing Honda said: “This is the culmination of three years hard work by all those involved in the creation and development of the Castrol Honda Red Riders Race Team. My Thanks to all our sponsors and dealers and in particular to Dave Borlase, Shayne King, Cody Cooper and all the other members of the team”
