Suzuki Desert Storm 03… bigger than a big thing!
Totally awesome and well worth the money…tracks were fantastic… weather was primo, atmosphere was hard to beat… a well organised event… bloody awesome, probably the best 2 day trail ride I have ever done… organization was 100%… Desert Storm rocked!!!!
Just some of the e mailed comments about the 2003 model Suzuki Desert Storm held 18-19 October 2003 at the base of Mount Ruapehu.
Can you believe 1150 riders Saturday and 850 Sunday. Now that is a serious load of mad keen off roaders piling in for the action.
The weather was warm and still making for great camping and picture perfect views of the Majestic Mountain and Rangipo Desert
The event begins about midday Friday with the first arrivals of campers. Although not planned the grass blast tracks were opened up on Friday night from 5-7pm to keep the early birds occupied… and then began the party. Lets just say there were some good times had as was evidenced by the bottle clean up on the Monday morning. The crowds were entertained by a couple of nutters who were jumping their scooters using a loading board resting on a chilly bin for a ramp. Big air, no fear or no brain, no pain????
The trails were long and interesting with heaps of variety to keep most riders happy.
2003 had a few more challenges for riders including steeper hills, creek crossings and a river bed section that had a type of quicksand to catch those that strayed from the beaten path. (Note Nick Reader buried his DRZ 125 in the quicksand while marking out and had to be assisted out).
Once creek section caused a bit of a bottleneck early on, but provided great entertainment, challenges and camera fodder for the event video.
Scooter racing attracted 14 true scooters including one stretched version featuring a toilet seat and bowl…. You had to see this thing to believe…
Now well and truly established as an annual festival the atmosphere at Desert Storm is great. The event is almost like a small rally similar to the Cold Kiwi rally. In a way Suzuki Desert Storm is a celebration of off road motorcycling.
For 2004 the challenge is to provide great riding, entertainment, safety and facilities for the hordes of motorcyclists and so to continue the magic that is Suzuki Desert Storm.
