Shayne King Racing - Press Release:

New Zealand Motocross Nationals
Slater Park, Huntly. September 28, 2003

Shayne King extended his lead in the New Zealand Motocross Championships at the penultimate round held at Huntly’s Slater Motocross Park with commanding wins over the opposition in variable conditions.

Despite the entire country suffering extreme weather conditions including torrential rain and snow, race day at Huntly started under sunny conditions with just a scattering of cloud to warn of what was to come. The first round of racing was on a hard dry track with Shayne easily winning the first 250cc race from Kawasaki’s Michael Cotter. In the 500cc class Shayne’s younger brother Damien got the holeshot, though a few laps later Shayne moved past to take the lead, by mid race older brother Darryll had squeezed past Damien to take second place making it an all King affair!

The second round of racing started under the torrential rain that had been threatening earlier. This made the event into a race for survival as the rain turned the track into a mud bath. In the 250cc race Shayne took a tumble on the slippery track and had to play catch up for the remainder of the race, ending up placing second to Suzuki rider Mark Penny.

The 500cc race was once again a battle of the Kings, as all three went side by side into the first turn. It was Shayne that came out in front, Darryll second and Damien in tow for third spot. Shayne and Darryll fought throughout the twenty minute moto as if it was a dry track, putting on quite a spectacle for the drenched spectators. Shayne came out the victor with Darryll a close second.

Event organisers held a meeting with the riders and subsequently decided to call off the days final round of racing and the meeting due to the atrocious weather conditions. “It was an interesting day – one minute we were racing in dust, then next thing it was a downpour” said a mud covered Shayne in the pits “I am happy to have extended my lead in the 250 class and gain six points over Darryll in the 500s and can’t wait for the final round! I have to take my hat off to the Huntly Motorcycle Club who ran a fantastic meeting under very trying conditions”
