Townley prepares for Des Nations on KTM 450.

After a hectic week of riding, testing, training, negotiating and racing, Ben Townley has his sights set on this weekend’s Motocross Des Nations in Zolder – Belgium.

BT raced a semi-factory KTM 450 yesterday at the final round of the Belgium championships as preparation for the Des Nations event where the New Zealand team are dark horses to take the victory or most certainly a podium position.

The heavier 450 machine demanded some respect from the kiwi youngster when he bulleted past 7 time’s world champ Stefan Everts in the first moto, only to be thrown off a few moments later. Everts could not avoid the fallen obstacles and was forced to hit the dirt. Both riders were shook up from the ordeal and thought it wiser to sit out the rest of the heat.

The second heat gave the crowd their monies worth, as Melotte, Coppins, Everts Bervoets and Townley jostled for positions, although the chasing train had no answer for Joel Smets who had checked out right from the start.
The final heat of the day saw BT ride a strong race until a mistake caused him another unwanted crash, relegating the KTM Champ rider to 9th.

“Man what a day! I can run up front - no problem. I just need to stay on the bike. I’ve done all my falling for the week - Des Nations should be a different story,” said Townley.
