KING CLAIMS TITLE

Reigning New Zealand motocross champion Shayne King added another trophy to his cabinet this past weekend at the final round of the Australian Thumper Nationals held in Wonthaggi, Victoria.

Though the points tell a different story, the weekend did not go all Shayne’s way. Race one saw Shayne finish only one lap before the big CRF480 Honda ground to a halt.
“I got a good start in third, behind Cheyne Boyd (KTM) and Darryll King (Yamaha), then coming up to the end of the first lap the bike started to lose power and slow down, finally stopping dead – right in front of the mechanics area! I freaked out – my first thought was - that’s it, the championships all over”

Shayne’s mechanic Glenn ‘Jimmy’ Macartney pulled out the spare, standard CRF450 out of the truck and began frantically turning it into a championship-winning bike. Thanks to Jimmy’s work Shayne got to the start line and he had just one thing on his mind by that stage, and that was to WIN!
And that he did from start to finish, stamping his authority over the field and removing any doubt that this championship would be his by the days end.

The final race of the day saw Shayne’s teammate Cody Cooper storm to his first holeshot of the series with Shayne close behind. By mid race Shayne had caught and passed Cody to maintain a two second lead over Cody and Yamaha mounted brother Darryll back in third. On the last lap Shayne made a small error that allowed the closely following Cody Cooper through to take the win – his first in the series. However, second place was good enough for Shayne to clinch the title. Speaking after the race Shayne said: “ I am so happy to win this title after such a stressful day today – losing 25 points to DK (Darryll King) in the first race was not a good way to start the weekend! I have to thank my mechanic Jimmy, Darryn and all the crew at Honda for making the day so memorable. I would also like to thank all of my sponsors for your continued support and encouragement and a special thanks to my wife Yvette and son Curtis”

And not a bad choice for the Kiwi team when they go to MXoN next month. You can bet that he will be there or there abouts.
