Rees First Non-Distributor Bike Home at the Last Round of the Australian Superbike Championship:

Whakatane’s Tony Rees returned to Australia at the weekend, to finish a creditable sixth and first non-distributor backed rider home, in the final round of the Australian Superbike Championship, at Eastern Creek, just outside Sydney.

Rees raced his 2002 Yamaha R1, the bike he rode to victory in last summer’s \"Battle of the Streets\" series, under the Sydney City Racing banner, for expatriate Kiwi, Ian Pero, brother of Mike.
The past New Zealand Superbike Champion, found it hard against the 2003 model Suzukis of Coxhell and Giles, the Hondas of Brookes and McCarthy and the Yamahas of Curtain and Stauffer.

Rees finished 7th in race one behind the distributor teams and held out McCarthy on his Honda to take sixth in race two.
Unfortunately the meeting was cancelled shortly after, due to a major accident during the Supersport race.

\"We had a reasonable weekend racing, but the whole pits were extremely down after the accident,\" said Rees from Sydney last night. On a slightly better note, Rees commented \"I am looking forward to returning in October for the Trans-Tasman Challenge.\"

It is understood the New Zealand Team is:
Tony Rees, Whakatane, Yamaha.
Jason McEwen, Palmerston North, Suzuki.
Brian Bernard, Wanganui, Suzuki.
Dennis Charlett, Palmerston North, Suzuki.
Chris Haldane, Auckland, Ducati.
