Tauranga Maize Paddock

The maize paddock at Welcome Bay Road saw fast and furious action last Sunday when the Tauranga Motorcycle Club held its monthly Maize Paddock Fun Day.

These maize paddock days cater for riders of all levels on all kinds of bikes, quads included, with the emphasis on fun.

However members of the club who hold competition licences were invited to participate in 3 races with points gained going towards the Club Championships. The grouping together of all classes provided very exciting racing.

Ray Hutt on a CR250, one of Tauranga’s leading local riders in the eighties, convincingly showed everyone how it is done and proved that experience is a key factor when he won all three races. Carl Williams recently returned from 6 weeks holiday and also on a CR250 held on for second place in front of junior member Phil Campbell. Phil on his CR125 was one of several juniors who took part in the same races but started from behind. He and CR85 rider Scott Barr-Smith, in particular, rose to the challenge and impressively worked their way up through the field. In the lower ranks the personal battles continued. David Orr just edged out Grant Smith but was himself headed off by Chris Dunstan who was flying the family colours after the withdrawal of Andrew and Russell through injury.

The mini track was especially popular. Quad and two wheeler riders went for all it was worth all day long in friendly rivalry. There was track time for experienced riders getting in some extra practice for the next round of the Minis Winter Series but also for beginner riders on their first day on a track.

The next Maize Paddock Fun Day will be held on Sunday 17th August. Contact Bill on 542 0692 for more info.
