Central Enduro Series Rnd 5:

From - John Rushworth:

Round 5 of the Central Enduro series was staged at Martinborough yesterday, Sunday, and for all those who can\'t remember what Martinborough is like in the dry, that was the day to be there. Surprisingly, after some heavy rain earlier in the week, the farm was in superb condition. There doesn\'t seem to be a lot of farm enduros (as opposed to the ubiquitous pine forests) and it makes the few that we still have even more special.

A good number of Enduro riders (48) were joined by 121 enthusiastic trail riders in one of the biggest Martinborough enduros of the last few years. Thanks to the strong winds in the later half of the week the ground was firm, and there was no rain on the day.

Ross Bird (WR250) rode his first competitive event since 2001 and, despite protesting that he was massively out of practice and only started to get into the swing of things in the later part of the day, still managed a very competitive 4th in the Experts class. Steven Bird (WRF250) was just too strong, winning the experts class by nearly a minute from Aaron Campbell (RM125) and John McKee (CRF450).

Murray Searle (YZ250) continues to dominate the Veterans class and Stephen Sergeant (RM125) had another win in the Intermediate Under class. Although Stephen currently trails Adrian Dickison by 3 points in the series he would in fact be in front after dropping a round.

Unfortunately no Ladies turned up to todays event. This is the first Central Enduro in quite a few years where there have been no women riders. It\'s a pity because this course was a pearler.

There was a keg put on after the event to help wash down the potatoes & venison and a large number of people stayed for prize giving. This was a real pity because I\'d forgotten the trophies. Many apologies!!! I will have them all there at the next round.

Thanks to the Martinborough club for an excellent day. A few more like this and they\'ll get a reputation for simply the best enduros in the country.
