HITTING THEM YOUNG:

In life we form our beliefs and habits early, so it follows that we should learn the correct way first...

Bikes in Schools number 3 was run Wednesday April 9 at the rural Ngakuru school situated in the Waikite valley West of Rotorua.

What was achieved? Firstly young people were warned to take care when riding motorcycles, especially ATV\'s. At one point, we deliberately tipped a Suzuki Eiger on it\'s side and asked the students to imagine being stuck under a rolling quad. We even asked the students to try to right the quad just to show how heavy a quad could be. We also talked about the need to wear helmets and the risks of doubling.

But is was not all seriousness and warnings. Cam Negus, Lyndsay Gemmell of Bike Force and myself also demonstrated just how much fun bikes can be with Lyndsay showing off on his Yamaha Raptor, myself on a DRZ 400 and Cam pulling long slow wheelies on a wee DRZ 125... This is the part where the kids cheer like crazy, then go home and harass their caregivers for a motorcycle.

Part three of Bikes in Schools takes place after school where kids who have bikes get a free 90 minute lesson. 3 riders turned up at Ngakuru to sharpen their skills on the course marked on the school field under the guidance of Nick. Talk about a dream come true - riding your motorbike on the school field!

Where to from here? Schools are very receptive to the motorcycle safety programme as people are still regularly being hurt on farm motorcycles.
Bikes in Schools will take place in Raetihi and Ohakune Primaries 13 May.

The Bikes in Schools promotion is a test program currently funded by Epic Events and is seeking funding to take the programme nationwide.
