MEDIA RELEASE:

FIM WORLD LONG TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP - IN BRIEF:

Motorcycle track racing has been huge in Europe for three-quarters of a century. Independent promoters in many countries staged big individual weekend race meetings for years, attracting riders from all over the world.

Traditionally the circuits were of sand, grass or a shale or granite composition, around 1000 metres in length, and conducive to a high-speed spectacle with skill and daring required in equal measure.
The World Long Track Championship was started by the FIM in 1956 to formalise and provide a uniform structure under which the leading riders could contest the ultimate prize in this discipline of the sport.

The first world champion was Basse Hveem from Norway.
New Zealand’s Ivan Mauger won the championship three times - in 1971, 1972, 1976 - and was runner-up in 1974 and 1975.
Egon Muller, Karl Maier, Gerd Riss and Robert Barth (Germany) and Simon Wigg and Kelvin Tatum (England) are other stellar names who have enjoyed multiple successes in the event.
