Junior Motocross Championships - Hawkes Bay:

Any doubts about the future of New Zealand Motocross were put to rest last weekend when 250 of New Zealand’s best riders competed over three days in ideal conditions on a fast Dick Gerkel Track.

Junior Motocross Commissioner Guy Merewether was bubbling over the prosopects,”There are genuine world champion prospects out there,” he said. Merewether was especially impressed with top girl rider Katherine Prumm of Pukekohe. She rode in two classes against the boys – 18 races in all and she looked all class in each one.

Australian visitor Toby Price dominated the 15-16yrs 125cc class, Blake Gillard was the only one to beat him.

Another standout performance was from Joseph Andrell who finished second behind Kirk Bezzant in the 12-14yrs 125cc group. Andrell only returned to the sport this year after a long lay off.

In winning the 11-12yrs 85cc class Brad Groombridge won all nine races. The extended format is a test for rider and machinery and gives everyone a chance.

The Cambridge/Taupo area has always been a strong motocross breeding ground, this year all New Zealanders winning their classes are domiciled there. With MNZs High Performance Manager, Nick Reader on hand all weekend it is likely a number of these rising stars will feature in the High Performance Motocross Squad which will be announced next month.

Winners:
8-10 yr. 85cc Ricoh Flavell(Taupo)
11-12yr. 85cc Brad Groombridge (Taupo)
13-16yr. 85cc Jonathon Llewellyn (Cambridge)
12-14 yr. 125cc Kirk Bezzant (Cambridge)
15-16 yr. 125CC Toby Price (Australia)
