Rees Triumphs At Gisborne

Whakatane’s Tony Rees is still King of the Streets, after winning both the Formula One and Robert Holden Memorial titles at the final round of \"The Battle of the Streets\" at Gisborne today Sunday 23 February.

The \"Battle of the Streets\" returned to the Awapuni circuit after a two-year break, through the hard work of the Gisborne Motorcycle Sports Club, with the support of Tourism Eastland.

Rees clinched the Robert Holden Memorial Trophy, on his Yamaha R1, with a convincing ride. While holding out the hard charging Craig Shirriffs from Palmerston North, on his Suzuki GSXR600, Rees set a new lap record of 51.025 secs on his second to last lap, to add to his lap records of the other two street circuits at Paeroa and Wanganui.

Shirriffs dominated both the Formula two and 600 Sports Production classes, in a dazzling display, chased hard by fellow Team Suzuki member Corey Oxenham from Hamilton.

The sidecar Trans Tasman Challenge was won by the visiting Australians led by the Sellar /McIntosh outfit. Sellar and McIntosh also won the individual \"Battle of the Streets\" title.
