SUPERCROSS SUCCESS

The inaugural Wanganui Suzuki Supercross, staged at Cook’s Gardens, Wanganui on Saturday night Jan 11 was a raging success.

The 7000 paying spectators watched New Zealand’s best, battle it out, in round two of the National Supercross Championship, in warm balmy conditions.

The purpose-built 300-metre track involved the trucking in of tons of soil and more than 1000 cubic metres of clay, to transform the infield of the Westpac Trust Stadium into a Supercross course.

This round, New Plymouth’s Shayne King, on his Honda CR250, was battling younger brother Damien from Cambridge, and young up an comer Mason Phillips from Te Puke, both on similar Hondas, for the 250cc Class honours after championship leader Darryl King decided to sit the meeting out.

\"It was great to be racing just down the road, it was like racing in front of a home crowd,\" said King.

The 125cc class honours were shared between youngest King brother Damien from Cambridge and young Te Puke hot shot Mason Phillips. Both riding Honda CR125s.

In the junior classes we saw Hamilton’s Jesse Wiki, Honda CR125, dominating the 15-16 years 125cc class, Auckland’s Blake Gillard, Kawasaki KX125, dominating the 12=14 years 125cc class.

The 13-16 years 85cc class was a three way battle between Taupo’s Lee McKinstry (Honda CR85), Morrinsville’s Nathan Loveridge (Suzuki RM85) and Matamata’s Aaron Mudgeway (Suzuki RM85), while Taupo’s Brad Groombridge dominated the 11-12 years 85cc class.
