Motocross ace Josh Coppins has been injured at a supercross event in the USA.

The 25-year-old New Zealander, runner-up world 250 champion, broke bones in his left ankle and right foot when he landed heavily over a jump. He will be operated on tomorrow and is expected to be out of racing for several weeks.

Coppins was in Friday practice for Saturday’s round two of the US Supercross Champs at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Arizona, riding the American series as training for his European-based world championship campaign.

Coppins is number one rider for the powerful Honda factory in the glamour, Motocross GP class at the world champs from March to September, on a CR250R for UK-based CAS Honda.

He joins his young protégé Ben Townley who is convalescing after a crash in America a fortnight ago. Both riders have been tipped as leading contenders for their respective world titles this year.
