Rees Takes Out Round Two:

Whakatane’s Tony Rees took two wins and a second in the Production Superbike Class, on his Yamaha R1, at round two of the Motorcycle Trader & News Road Race Championship at Manfeild today, December 15.

Rees, riding a near stock motorcycle after receiving the incorrect parts from Australia during the week, now leads the class with 99 points from Auckland’s Andrew Stroud on his Suzuki GSXR1000, with 94.5. Stroud scored a disappointing fifth in race one, but broke the lap record while chasing Rees in race two. The pair was clearly beaten in the final race by Wanganui’s Brian Bernard on another Suzuki.

Timaru’s Brendon Gare took his Suzuki GSXR600 to a win in the first 600cc Sports Production race, while series leader, Palmerston North’s Craig Shirriffs only managed fifth.

Shirriffs now only leads Gare by 11points.

This class will be very interesting, as the remaining three round are on tracks more familiar to Gare.

Christchurch’s veteran Steve Ward leads the 125cc Grand Prix class by 10 points, from fellow Christchurch rider Cameron Horgan, after taking two wins and a second today.

Palmerston North’s Troy O’Donoghue dominated the 250cc class and now leads the class with 108 points.

Formula Three saw the continued dominance of the Suzuki SV 650s of Taranaki’s Bruce Hansen and Terry Fitzgerald.

Reigning champion John Blaymires took three wins from three starts, after the way was left clear, with yesterday’s accident, in which series leader Colin Buckley crashed ending up in Hospital.

The Championship now takes a break over Christmas and resumes in Invercargill in the middle of January.
