Road Racing Alive and Well:

This weekend sees the cream of New Zealand’s road racers descending on the Manawatu, for the second round of the Motorcycle Trader & News Road Race Championship at Manfeild Park, on the outskirts of Feilding.

At the TT meeting last Sunday, even despite the bad weather, we saw some of the best road racing from some of the biggest fields in ten years.

In the Production Superbike class, no fewer than four past Open Class Champions took the track.

All of the top ten riders are capable of winning on any given day.

This weekend Palmerston North’s Jason McEwen will join that elite group on his new Yamaha R1, so we are set to see a royal battle between the Suzukis of Auckland’s Andrew Stroud and Wanganui’s Brian Bernard against the Yamahas of Whakatane’s Tony Rees and McEwen.

The 600cc Sports Production class is also hotting up with Palmerston North’s Craig Shirriffs and Timaru’s Brendon Gare, both on Suzuki GSXR600s leading the charge. But reigning champion New Plymouth’s Shaun Harris won’t be far behind on his Honda CBR600, in fact on what is his home track, Harris could well be in front.
