High Flying Supercross action at Tokoroa:

Motorsport enthusiasts need to make a date right now for the Tokoroa National Supercross 18 January 2003.

Because the race action in the stadium supercross circuit is going to be intense with NZ’s top riders taking on some of Australia’s supercross top Guns.

The riders will not only be battling each other, but also attacking the spectacular circuit made up of huge doubles, triple jumps, tabletops, step-ups, step-downs, whoops and a short start straight.

Riders often fly side by side up to 25 metres from up ramp to down ramp. Thrills and spills are common with many races coming down to the last corner where desperate passing moves are made in an attempt for the win.

Tokoroa Supercross is New Zealand’s premier Supercross having been running since 1988. Supercross was invented in the USA in 1979 to take the sport of Motocross to the public. Supercross has since flourished in America and Australia creating heroes including Jeremy McGrath, Chad Reed and Ricky Carmichael.

The event currently attracts 80 of New Zealand’s top Motocross riders from all over New Zealand. Supercross is suited for above average riders only. Former champions include former world #2 Darryll King, Daryl Hurley and Australian champions Peter Melton and Eddie Warren.

An explosive Freestyle Motocross jumping competition will be integrated into the motorcycling extravaganza. New Zealand’s top freestyle riders will be on show busting moves like ‘superman seat grabs, indian airs, cordovas and heel clickers’. Riders will include Tokoroa’s local rider Nick Franklin, winner of the Vodafone X Games in Hamilton 2002 and Brodie Henricksen, X Games #4. Purpose built up ramps and down ramps will send the riders 20 metres though the air while pulling out all the big moves.

The event starts at midday with qualifying, FMX demos and preliminary rounds before a tea break from 6pm to 7 pm. After 7 pm the lights come on and the action heats up with race finals, FMX demos and a hard-core 10-rider dash for cash finishing up at 10pm. Tickets are sold at the gate. Family discounts apply.

Supercross is set to explode in Tokoroa this summer.
