GOOD TIMES UNDER THE MOUNTAIN:

A DRZ IN THE TUSSOCK:

We thought 450 riders per day in 2000 and 600 riders per day in 2001 was great, but 817 and 556 rider October 19-20 2002 was more than could have been expected!!

Even though the clouds threatened moisture over Mt Ruapehu, the vehicles on Saturday morning just kept piling in, ready for SUZUKI DESERT STORM 2002.

The trails for 02 were a little more challenging, with much less gravel than 2001 and according to most riders, the balance of tight and open riding was about bang on.

Other popular features included the kids coaching, the mechanical back up, the cinema and the Suzuki Demo bikes available for a spin ranging from the JR 50 right through to the mighty DRZ 400 and LTZ 400 quad.

The disappointment of the event was the cancellation of the Palmy FMX Freestyle jumping demo due to high winds. There was disappointment all around from the organisers, riders and FMX jumpers.

Some quotes from riders;

Hi there, awesome ride last weekend, just like to say thanks, better than last year, better weather this year.

Had a ride on a DR250 but not the 400. It was too popular to be able to arrange.

Thanks for a great, professional event. Tracks were awesome.

Nick just arrived home, thanks for such a great event. 6 of us came up from Wellington and we all agreed it was a great weekend. Please pass on our thanks to all your volunteers and sponsors. We came back tired, satisfied and just one broken spoke that needs fixing between the six bikes.

The success of Suzuki Desert Storm seems to lie in the simplicity of the event.
A unique location… Great trails… some funky sounds, great mates and good food all add up to an atmosphere that can’t be beat.
