From the Desk of the MNZ CEO

Newsletter number three. This covers the week ending 26 July:

What has been happening?

As mentioned last week I attended a 2-day Conference on event marketing held in Auckland. It was really good to talk with Corporates, Councils, promoters and people who have run successful events (such as the Americas Cup and The Ellerslie Flower Show.)

It confirmed three things for me

MNZ is faced with a branding exercise. The brand is not known well enough, it needs to be developed. The MNZ brand needs to stand for consistency, quality and unity. Once this is achieved funders will want to put their name next to ours. Unity is the hard one. In my short experience too many motorcyclists think narrowly .To understand branding it can be useful to think about your personal brand, we all have one. Your brand is how you present yourself, how you communicate, your values and what you stand for. I see my signature as precious. Once I sign something it has my brand- just like the Nike swoosh.

To make this happen we need a Strategic Plan.
A singular document that outlines our organisational direction.

We need strong proactive relationships with a number of sectors. Obviously the corporate sector but also the Government Departments; like the LTSA, Police, DOC and the Local Authorities. We need to get along well with other sports bodies as well. The surprise for me though, was how political the events and sports bodies are. At the time of writing we do not know who our politicians will be for the next three years. Once it is known I suggest you get to them at a local level. Here is a good link to find your MP http://www.clerk.parliament.govt.nz/yourmp/listmps/index.html

Club Newsletters
I read them quickly. Thanks for sending them on. In general I think they are very good, sometimes provocative. I feel I need to reply to the Otago Motorcycle Club. In their July issue George Tofield opines about the ACC scheme and questions if it is still a "No Faults" scheme. George, good article but I disagree with you. Look at this way, in a car or on a bike you can – be drunk, have no helmet, have no WOF, have no licence or be banned from driving, break the speed limit and every other road rule, drive on the wrong side of the road, drive a defective or dangerous vehicle – you can do one or all of those things and still be covered by ACC. I think that is a quintessential "No Faults " scheme and I think that it contributes to New Zealand’s unacceptable accident rate.

Club Spotlight: Hawkes Bay Motor Cycle Club
The club hosts the third round of the Senior MX Champs on the 10 and 11 August at the Dick Gerkel Raceway. On the Friday evening there will a social/video evening for riders and friends at Taradale. It starts at 7pm and Daryll King is the guest speaker. Good luck to Hawkes Bay, they have a reputation for running very good events and they expect a crowd of 3000. Warren (Wiz) Johnson is their PR man. For more get in touch with him divehqhastings@xtra.co.nz

Other clubs can email me if they want to get under the spotlight trevor@motorcyclingnz.co.nz
