Yes, yes, it’s true, the Drop Bear, Ben Townley, will stick a foot (paw?) in to test the waters at Budds Creek on 16 June. The date falls in a break between the GP’s of Austria and Bulgaria, paving the way for KTM and Vangani Racing to arrange for the seventeen year old New Zealander to get his first taste of racing in the US Nationals.

Townley will receive assistance from the KTM Red Bull team, which has been plagued with injury woes this season, with both Grant Langston and Brock Sellards on the injury list. Although the race is a one-off event for Townley at this stage, it will give him some experience of the US scene, and he has definite plans to participate in more races in the US later on.

“It is an excellent opportunity for me,” Townley said when the hurried arrangements for his trip started taking shape. “I have always dreamt about racing in the ‘States, and now that it happens it almost seems unreal. It will be a new experience and I will have to adapt fast, but I am keen to match my speed against the riders over there.”

Towney has been one of the sensations of the 125cc world championship class this season. He scored a second place finish in the first GP of the year at Valkenswaard, and had another podium finish at the most recent GP in Castiglione del Lago, Italy. He currently lies fifth in the 125cc world championship standings, just three points of third position.
