Boris Chambon on his Factory Husqvarna set a blistering time in practice for tomorrow’s AMV French Grand Prix at Fougerés, the first round of the 2002 Maxxis European Supermotard Championship. His time of 1.30.023 was almost ½ a second quicker than nearest rival Eddy Seel, the reigning Maxxis European Supermotard Champion on his Zupin Team Husqvarna. 3rd fastest was Jurgen Kunzel on his Team Mizu-Sebring KTM just 6/100ths of a second behind Seel.
Free practice and qualifying sessions took place in perfect weather conditions and produced a few surprises amongst this year’s title contenders with several privateers featuring amongst the big team’s riders.
The fast but twisty track obviously suited Italian Ivan Lazzarini’s Team Rigo Yamaha 500 as he produced a superb qualifying effort, as did Frenchman Francois Vavasseur, who revelled in the increased power output of his new 450cc Yamaha engine.
Crowd favourite and current French Championship leader Thierry Van Bosch reserved the title offensive on his Factory KTM for Sunday’s races, but he still managed to easily record a top ten time.
Other notable practice efforts were Gérald Delepine’s spectacular style on the new Team Bizar Vertemati, showman Frédéric Fiorentino’s debut on the Team Steveniers 660 KTM replica and veteran Klaus Kinigardner on the Factory KTM. Klaus once again outpacing lots of younger riders to record a brilliant time of 1.30.531.
