freestyle mx set to explode at whakatane summercross

When jumping a 25 metre gap, would you throw yourself off the back of a cut down motocross bike to hang by your finger tips to The fender, hoping that maybe you can scramble back on the bike before you hit mother earth??? No I didn’t think so, but some people do this for kicks…

If you want to check the boys out and see some crazy moves, then you need to be at Whakatane Summercross December 29-30 2001.

There are around ten NZ Motocross riders specialising in FMX jumping. Summercross will feature five of the best including Wellington youth sensation Honda Red Bull rider Luke Wara, his Wellington mate Tim Watson, MX/FMX Tokoroa rider Nick Franklyn and Mad Mike Waddett from Auckland.

The trick descriptions are almost as diverse as the riders with names like Cordovas, Indian Airs, Saran wraps, McMetz, sterilizer, bar hop, superman seat grabs.. The list goes on.

A huge earth down ramp has been built by Waiotahi Contractors for the Freestylers with a base made out of 36 Skidder tyres and 500 car tyres. The downramp stands 3.5 metres tall and is 23 metres long. An aluminium up ramp will be placed 25 metres from the down ramp to launch the bikes into orbit…. Then comes the trickery and hopefully a clean landing.

The Mini track has also been totally redesigned for maximum fun for the pocket rockets with cool berms and mini size table tops. The Mini event will be managed by Vicky and Tony Rees so you can be sure there will be heaps of fun riding and giveaways.

The MNZ supported Trials boys, Warren Laugeson and Andy Poad, will be putting on a top show leaping around the place, putting their bikes in some crazy spots, balancing, hopping on the rear wheel and climbing sharp, steep culverts, tyres pellets and so on.

Oh and yep Darryll King, Craig Anderson and Shayne King will also be banging bars along with NZ’s best Motocross racers, great music, food….

Hey and while you’re at Whakatane, take your time, check out the beaches, grab a cappuccino and lunch at the Why Not Café, stroll the strand, have a snoop around the Big Game fishing catches of the day down at the heads…
