North Is. Junior MX Champs Kick Off

Posted: Tue 09 Oct 2001

The North Island Junior Championships began last weekend at Motuiti, just north of Foxton. The weather varied over the two days, fine and hot on Saturday and wet on Sunday.

The track prepared by the Gold Coast Motocross Club held up well, giving the 130 entries five races each.

Michael Vining of Taupiri on a Honda CR 125, dominated the 15-16 years 125ccclass, even after crashing in corner two in his last race coming away last,he still managed to charged through the field to come home second.

The 13-16 years 85cc class saw the arrival of Australian Blake Williams from Melbourne, on a Honda CR80. Blake is in New Zealand for three weekends racing (The Nth Is. Champs, the Waikato Champs next weekend and the Taupo meeting at Labour Weekend). However he didn\'t have it all his own way, being kept honest by Matamata\'s Aaron Mudgeway on another CR80. Mudgeway came out on top after Williams had a DNF in the last race.

In the 12-14 years 125cc class, Jesse Wiki was a cut above the rest taking five straight wins. This was more notable, by the fact that he has only recently moved up to the 125cc from 85cc.

The 11-12 years 85cc class saw the winning done by no fewer than four riders in the five closely fought races. Leaving Taupo\'s Brad Groombridge on top, on his Kawasaki KX85, followed by Ben Philbert on his Yamaha YZ80.

Leaving only the 8-10 years 85cc class, which was taken out by reigning National Champion, Matthew Hunt of Gisborne, on his Yamaha YZ80.
