Rowe Dominant at Round Two of Spectro Winter Motocross Series

Posted: Sun 24 Jun 2001

After his third placing at the IRC Tarawera 100 yesterday, New Zealand 4-Stroke Motocross Champion, New Plymouth’s Mitch Rowe drove from Kawerau to Gladstone in the Wairarapa, to contest round two of the Spectro Oils Winter Motocross Series.

Conditions were near perfect at the “Mountain Motocross Track” today, for the 187 riders entered. The weather began hot and dusty, but a light shower of rain prior to racing settled the dust.

In the Pro 250/Open class, Rowe on his KTM 520 had a daylong battle, with Featherston’s Corrie Sargent on a Honda CR250, but a call of nature, just before race two, saw Sargent miss the start, giving the race and overall points for the day to Rowe. Dannevirke’s Graeme Bowie on a Yamaha YZ426F took second overall for the day, leaving Sargent third.

Leon Andrews from Palmerston North on his Yamaha YZ 250F won the Pro 125 class for the day, ahead of fellow Yamaha riders, Stratford’s Cameron Laird second and Palmerston North’s Blair Meyer third.

Another star was junior rider, Masterton’s Mason Wilkie who dominated the 8-11years 80cc class, prior to joining a 10 rider strong New Zealand team to attend the Australian Junior Motocross Championship at Newry in Victoria in a fortnight.
