How does two days of trail riding in one of the most scenic and unique trail riding regions of NZ sound to you? Maybe adding tasty army cooked meals, night time entertainment, big screen video replays of the day, a DJ and a huge marquee to hang out in might make you even keener!

Suzuki Desert Storm, one of NZ’s premier two day trail rides has been confirmed for October 27-28. Suzuki is pleased to announce it’s continued backing of the event and with the very popular and comprehensive DR range of bikes, Suzuki is a natural sponsor of the Desert Storm trail ride. Acerbis and Spectro lubricants are also supporting the event. Event Manager Nick Reader has been negotiating with property Owners and Managers over the past 6 months in order to secure the venue for 2001.

Desert Storm, held in the Southern foothills of Mt Ruapehu, was brought back to life in 2000 after the event had ceased to be run for about 5 years. An astounding 450 riders per day took part in the event and from all accounts, had a great time. Features of the event included over 130 km of trail riding made up of two 50 km loops, one cross country loop, a hill climb, a kids track and a novice track. A central Marquee and a night time trials riding demonstration by NZ champ Warren Laugeson were also popular. The unique mountain scenery was a major feature of the event – crisp blue mountain streams, an established pine forest and the majestic Mount Ruapehu make for an amazing riding venue.

Improvements to the 2001 event include a bridge over the first river crossing, a 30 km challenge trail and all tracks being open both days. There will also be a new Saturday night entertainment feature. The river crossing caused some problems for a few riders last year so the bridge option should eliminate any difficulties with the wet stuff. The new challenge trail will utilize an area of the forest that is a little bit steeper than the rest of the territory providing an extra challenge and variety for the more experienced riders.

The NZ Army has also confirmed their continued support of the event so riders can look forward to hot and tasty army cooked meals and special army equipment displays. And of course the Army boys will be out on their Khaki painted 2 and 4 wheelers doing sweep and First Aid.

Entry forms will be available from Motorcycle magazines, MNZ affiliated motorcycle Clubs, Suzuki dealers and via websites by late July.

Desert Storm is a great way to get away from it all on your dirt bike with your mates. No hassles, no deadlines, just great fun.
