All-new CR250R for 2002

Posted: Wed 30 May 2001

The Honda CR250R has been totally redesigned from the wheels up for 2002. Highlights of the new model are a new, lighter twin-spar aluminium frame and swingarm, and a totally new engine with class-leading power and performance. The new model also features improved rider ergonomics and a new rear wheel and hub design for lower unsprung weight. The 2002 CR250R builds on the impressive track record of its predecessor and takes Honda’s legendary MotoCrosser to the next level.

The powerful new case-reed engine features a newly designed air intake boot with 65cc greater volume, providing a 7% increase in airflow capacity for improved performance in the mid and upper rpm range. The RC-style exhaust valve features an NSR road-racing inspired rotary flap design with electronic control, a first for a mass-production motorcycle. The electronic control module uses engine rpm to calculate exhaust valve position and signal a DC servo motor to adjust the RC valve, providing a smooth transition from low to mid-range rpm and a broader torque curve.

The new third-generation, lighter twin-spar aluminium frame and swingarm provide an optimal balance of rigidity, compliance and strength. The frame cross section is not only slimmer, but allows the rider’s legs to be positioned at the narrowest point, thus providing improved riding comfort while maintaining excellent handling feel. Ergonomics are further enhanced by raising the handlebar and moving it closer to the rider, and also by raising the seat and footpegs. A redesigned rear wheel, hub and braking system reduce unsprung weight, and there are numerous other detail improvements.

The new CR250R is distinguished by Honda Racing-inspired colours and graphics.

‘The CR250R has long been the machine of choice for the serious MotoCross competitor’, said Clive Cooper-Smith, General Manager of Blue Wing Honda Ltd. ‘The new 2002 model improves on its famous predecessor in every way, and is destined for a successful future on the off-road circuits.’

The 2002 CR250R will be available in New Zealand in August.
