All-new frame, engine improvements for 2002 CR125R

Honda’s lightweight MotoCross champ, the CR125R, will receive major specification improvements for the 2002 model year. The improvements include an all-new aluminium frame and swingarm, a major engine upgrade, and other detail modifications designed to reduce weight and make maintenance easier. The revised model will be available from September, with the recommended retail price unchanged.

An all-new, lighter, twin-spar aluminium frame and swingarm combine to provide greater rigidity and strength. The semi-double-cradle design has a narrower cross section, allowing a more comfortable riding position and better handling control. Improvements to the wheel and suspension design are designed to give the CR125R a flatter ride with less pitching.

There are also significant engine improvements. A new air intake boot, a new 36mm Mikuni TMX-x carburettor and redesigned cylinder porting improve mid-range and over-rev power delivery. Gearbox and final drive ratios are revised to match the engine’s enhanced power delivery. Ease of maintenance is also improved, with a redesigned chain guide system which increases durability by 300%.

Other detail improvements to the wheel hubs and braking system contribute to a useful reduction in unsprung weight.

‘The CR125R has long been the backbone of off-road racing in New Zealand’, said Clive Cooper-Smith, General Manager of Blue Wing Honda Ltd. ‘It has proved that it can be fully competitive against larger-engined bikes, yet it also has the light weight and manoeverability that make it an ideal machine for new entrants to the sport. We are delighted to be able to bring a quicker, even better handling 2002 CR125R to the market for no increase in price on the previous model’.
