Slight Bows Out Of AMA Superbikes

Posted: Thu 22 Mar 2001

Former Suzuka eight hour winner Aaron Slight will not race the AMA Superbike series this season, sources close to Slight and Ducati say.

Slight has decided instead to race the British Touring Car series.

Slight did not seem overly thrilled at Daytona to be racing in America, and after the race he told anyone who\'d ask that the race and procedures within the race seemed daft to him.

Ducati has been trying since Daytona to sign the former Honda World Superbike charger, but Slight has reportedly made his decision known, and he won\'t be at Sears Point for the next AMA round.

Slight was mystified at Daytona that riders were mounting new bikes during red flags, including his CompAcc.com teammate Larry Pegram, whose Ducati lay in flames one moment, and Pegram was on the grid on another bike the next.

Slight bowing out leaves two spots open on Ducati teams here in America as it\'s certain that Scott Russell won\'t ride at Sears Point. Sources and pundits say that riders in line for the open spots include Tom Kipp Jr, Jamie James and Anthony West, the Aussie youngster left ride less this year.

Kipp, for one, has more Superbike poles and podium finishes than either of the remaining AMA Ducati riders, Pegram and Rapp. \"Kipp\'d be an excellent choice for Ducati right now,\" said Jim Leonard, former crewchief of the Vance and Hines Ducati team.
