Castrol Honda Red Riders had a full team turnout at the King of the Caves event, held on Neil Boyd’s property at Waipu caves, near Whangarei, on 24th and 25th February.

The event was run over two days, with the Cross Country on the Saturday and the MotoCross on the Sunday. It was a brilliantly organised event on a superbly prepared track.

Castrol Honda rider Paul Whibley dominated the Cross Country event, winning easily on the CR250, with teammate Peter Broxholme, riding the CR125, finishing second.

Sunday’s MotoCross treated spectators to some sensationally close racing, with Whibley again taking overall honours. Stacey Oldeman, also on a CR250, was second. Kawasaki’s Calvin Ferguson finished third, closely followed by Cody Cooper on his debut ride on the Honda CR250. Richard Adamson was fifth on the new HRC XR650. With no 500cc Moto class at this event, Adamson and the other 500 Moto class riders were competing directly against the 250cc 2-stroke MotoCross bikes.

In the 125cc class, Castor Honda’s Peter Broxholme annhilated the field in all three races, showing that he has the form to be a national champion. Broxholme finished the third race with a huge ‘heel-clicker’ for the entertainment of the crowd.

Race team manager Dave Borlase said: ‘The calibre of this event and the preparation and support shown by Jobe Honda in conjunction with the Boyd family would be the envy of any race organiser. We were proud to be part of it. Events such as the King of the Caves and the commitment shown by our race team members can only enhance the profile of off-road racing in this country.
