Myself and my main man Cameron Negus along with South Island gun riders Nathan McAlwee, Henry Devereux, Quinton and Hayden McKay delivered the training.
The riders improved their technique, speed and confidence as well as had a lot of fun. The talent level was high with many riders showing promise and the desire to go to a top national level.
December 16 was spent training 25 riders at the Whakatane MX track near Awakaponga to crank the rider’s skills up prior to the big Whakatane Christmas MX meeting.
December 17 saw 33 keen riders take part in a road rider training event at Taupo guided by legendary Fred Merkel and Andrew Hardisty.

March 25 sees the Taupo Motor race circuit back in action for another advanced road rider training event. Riders learn bike set up, cornering lines, accelerating, braking all under the watchful eyes of top NZ racers such as Suzuki’s Brian Bernard. A BBQ style lunch is included.
Back to Taupo May 5-6, but this time it’s off road and it’s for girls only (sorry Bentman – you can not come to help out…) The event is the annual woman’s off road training camp that has been running for 6 years. The event suits off road riders of all abilities including Trail, Adventure and Motocross riders. Most of the trainers are woman also to keep the event as female focused as possible. The event includes heaps of free riding around the Taupo Mini MX track and in the Kaingaroa forest.
And then time for the littlies of the sport to have a go – the Mini riders. The date is provisionally set for June 16-17. Taupo is the venue again at the Iwitahi Outdoor center in Kaingaroa forest. Parents are encouraged to attend to make for a real family fun atmosphere.
A full range of off road training events will take place May to July this year from Auckland to Wellington.
