GP500 Pole to McWilliams & Aprilia

Irishman Jeremy Mc Williams became the first British rider to take a GP500 pole for 13 years. The 36-year-old Ulsterman put the Aprilia V twin on pole for tomorrows Phillip Island race when he clocked a 1.32.552 in the final qualifying session.

Alex Barros took 2nd place with a 1.32.811, Legis Laconi on the Red Bull is third Yamaha. Kenny Roberts the newly crowned world champ filled out the front row.

High winds and rain had dogged the earlier sessions but this session was in the dry.

Local man Garry McCoy went off the circuit on the hairpin and finally qualified 6th behind Capirossi. Max Biaggi fell late in practice and starts from the 3rd row in 12th position
